Doughnut Vault = my all time absolute favorite doughnut joint. Honestly, I'm not really a doughnut girl, but I will never turn down a Doughnut Vault doughnut! They are delicious.
Came on a busy Friday morning to get their doughnuts before I leave Chicago for good and wouldn't be returning for a long time to experience their doughnut again! Although I've never come in the past when there is a wait, since I used to live fairly close and would come during off times..., this line is actually not long at all. Their Saturdays are insanely packed with long lines from tourists and locals alike that want to get their doughnut fix on. Well, as my last time eating their doughnut for over 1+ year, I was more than glad to wait in line but was anxious and constantly checking their Twitter to see whether they still have any of my favorite Chestnut glazed doughnuts left. ::fingers crossed::
Well, they only had half a dozen of Chestnuts left while I was waiting in line, and as you can tell... There were tons of people waiting. Now it was a concern whether I would even get a single doughnut at all! Chestnuts were all sold out, and there were 6 doughnuts left when it got to me. I got 3 Vanilla glazed and left the other 3 Vanillas for the folks behind me. The girl behind me was pretty nice, she asked the dude behind her how many he wanted, he said 1, so she took 2 and gave him the last 1. Everyone after the guy had to leave Doughnut Vault without a doughnut. I would... hate to be one of those unfortunate people. =\ Yielding no return after waiting on line forever.
Some FYIs: Doughnut Vault is only open at 8 a.m. Tuesday - Friday, and 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday, as well as closed when they run out of doughnuts from Tuesday - Saturday. You can follow them on Twitter and Facebook to keep posted on how many and which doughnuts they still have left as well as if they are all sold out for the day, so you don't have to make the trip there and then find out all their doughnuts are gone. Doughnut Vault is cash only . Make sure you have enough cash when you come here, because it would suck terribly if you waited on line for a while and then find out while paying that you don't have enough dough for the dough-nuts. :)
Below are the pricing for their goods:
- Buttermilk Old Fashioned: $2
- Gingerbread Stack: $3 (comes in a stack of 3, making it $1 each)
- Glazed (Chestnut, Vanilla, Chocolate) $3
- Coffee: $1
They also offer seasonal jelly doughnuts and specials of the week that you can find on their website.
I started coming to Doughnut Vault around when they first opened, which was around 2 years ago. This lady has been there ever since the start. (Side note: her favorite is also the glazed Chestnut. ;]) So naturally, I got a picture with her, with her holding the "Sold Out" sign (her choice!), before leaving. We chatted and she will actually be moving on from Doughnut Vault to pursue international traveling and other interests. Crazy since she is one of the original crew! Best of luck to her as she moves on to new and exciting opportunities.
Ambiance: 9/10 (very unique, but also super tiny!)
Highlight: Glazed Chestnut and Old Fashioned
Value: Although the doughnuts might seem pricey, they are super delicious and the glazed doughnuts are huge . You won't regret getting them. Also, everybody's talking about them, so just get it out when you're in Chicago!
